Favorite gospel hymns from the Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist tradition. Beautifully sung just as you would hear them, straight from the hymnal. People love this CD - they always say “They don’t sing these hymns anymore!
NOTES
I spent 22 years studying and singing classical music on the east coast, much of it in New York City. I have always enjoyed guest singing in churches. As I guest sang, I asked people about what they wanted to hear I kept getting the same message. Sing us the old hymns, without jazzing them up or doing a fancy arrangement. Let us hear them the way they were meant to be sung.
And so I compiled a list of the all time classic hymns, "In The Garden, Shall We Gather at The River, How Great Thou Art, etc" and decided to record them as my grandmother would have heard them in the small country church she attended.
I assembled a choir from area churches and we recorded Grandma's Favorite Gospel Hymns at Halfway Creek Lutheran Church outiside of Holmen, Wisconsin, which is pictured on the cover of the CD. We scheduled two sessions and had five rehearsals in preparation for the recording. After the first three hymns went smoothly, my recording engineer Brett Huus turned to me and said, "I wonder if they know it doesn't usually go this smoothly?" We continued on with the session and kept everything fresh and from the heart, and laid down all 18 songs in the one session, and we cancelled the second session.
I truly believe that the holy spirit was with us as we sang with our hearts and voices, never considering that it was a difficult task, or even that it was a labor of any sort. When the CD was produced we did two fundraising concerts on the same day, filling Halfway Creek Lutheran Church twice, selling over 200 CD's and raising over $5000 for their building fund. This was the most positive and successful musical project I have been involved in during all my years of performance. I will always treasure this CD and the music making in that small country church.
